MELBOURNE BRANCH
WESLEYAN MISSIONARY SOCIETY

Want of space has obliged us to postpone until now the following brief notice of the seventh anniversary of the above society.

The usual preparatory sermons were preached on Sunday, the 21st February 1847, by the Rev. Messrs. Andrew Mitchell Ramsay and William Jarrett, and Mr. Assistant-Protector Edward Stone Parker. The anniversary was held in the Wesleyan Chapel on the following evening.

After the meeting had been opened with singing and prayer, his Worship the Mayor of Melbourne was called on to preside. The Chairman's address, though short, was very appropriate. He now called upon the Secretary to read the report, a copy of which we were unable to obtain. The income of the parent society for the past year was £112,823 9s. 6d.; the expenditure £112,056 14s. 8d.

The following are the resolutions which were adopted by the meeting:-

Moved by the Rev. Andrew Mitchell Ramsay; seconded by Henry Hopkins, Esq., -

"That the report which has now been read be received; and that this meeting gratefully acknowledges the Divine blessing vouchsafed to Wesleyan and other Evangelical Missionary Societies."

Moved by the Rev. William Jarrett; seconded by Sidney Stephen, Esq., and supported by the Rev. Edward Sweetman -

"That the success realised during the past year is regarded as furnishing encouragement to future effort; and since so many of the human family are destitute of the Gospel, this meeting, recognising the claims which they have upon its increasing liberality, solemnly pledges its renewed exertions on their behalf."

Moved by Edward Stone Parker, Esq.; seconded by the Rev. Alexander Morison -

"That this meeting contemplates with especial gratitude the success of the Gospel among the aboriginal natives of Western Australia; and that it engages to be more diligent in prayer for the aborigines of the Port Phillip district and for the heathen world at large - for managers of missionary institutions, and for missionaries who toil in the field; in order that notwithstanding all opposing influences the truth may speedily spread and prevail."

Moved by the Rev. James Forbes; seconded by the Rev. William Lowe -

"That the thanks of this meeting be presented to the officers and committee for their services during the past year, and that the following persons be appointed to act for the present year, viz, Committee - Messrs. S. Stephen, T. Wellard, Galagher, Webb, Pascoe, Fenton, Burns, Horton, Willoughby, Jones, Hinton, Ordish, Teeson, Thacker, Thompson, P. Dredge, Powell, and P. Davis; Treasurers - Rev. Edward Sweetman and Mr. J. Jones; Secretary - Mr. W. Hinton."

On the motion of Mr. Sweetman, his Worship now left the chair, which being taken by Henry Hopkins, Esq., it was moved by the Rev. Edward Sweetman, and seconded by Edward Stone Parker, Esq. -

"That the thanks of this meeting be presented to his Worship the Mayor for his kindness in presiding on the present occasion."

The amount raised by collections this year in Melbourne (including three guineas from his Worship the Mayor) exceeded that of last year by about £10; at William's Town the sum raised more than doubled that of last year, and in each of the other places, the collections were better this year than last.

The coming year, however, it is expected will be one of increasing prosperity as regards the Melbourne circuit. A missionary spirit seems to have taken possession of many. They feel more than ever the obligations under which they lie to exert themselves in so good and so noble a cause. Several pious and benevolent ladies of the Wesleyan communion have undertaken to collect for the missionary fund; and a considerable increase in the number of missionary boxes is confidently spoken of.

It appears, therefore, that the missionary anniversary has been an encouraging season this time. It was held several months later than previous meetings of this kind have been held, for which two reasons may be given: first, the Wesleyans had deferred the holding of their chapel anniversary to about the usual time for their missionary meeting to be held, and was obliged therefore to postpone the latter; and next, they delayed it till February thinking that the Rev. William Binnington Boyce would be present with them by that time; but it seems that he has been obliged to defer his visit to Melbourne till after the arrival of the missionary ship "John Wesley," which is daily expected at Sydney.
